Summary

This workshop includes 2 days of sessions on Mithila Painting for young adults who are interested in learning about this art form. The workshop includes introductory courses designed for the beginners level and intermediate level participants.


Goal: The overall goal of this workshop is to introduce the interested art enthusiast to learn the folk art forms of Mithila painting which is majorly practiced by women in the southern part of Nepal and Bihar side of India. We want to share the basic forms of this painting and make them familiar with some of the art pratice.


Sharing Points at the 1st day of class:

  • Form of folk art practiced majorly by women of Nepal (southern side) and India (Bihar)

  • Mithila art/Madhubani art- 2D, simple patterns, symmetrical motifs,

  • Handed over from one generation of women to other

  • Story-telling- Women telling stories of each other, personal narratives

  • Religious practice- in festivals, myths, religion

  • Floor, walls, clothes, papers, clay pots, bamboo artifacts

  • Traditionally- natural pigments (flowers/herbs/leaves) for color, bamboo’s kimchi, rice batter

Basic Course

 

Day 1 Activity: Mithila Flowers and Tree motifs

Duration: 4 hrs (30 min break)

(Shall we do 2 hrs pen and markers- 2 hrs paint and brush?)

 

Goal:  Introduce to the mithila art (See the sharing points above).  Learn about the various motifs of flowers, trees and borders in the mithila painting.

 

Activity: Pencil Drawings of the motifs from samples and finish with marker pens/shine pens. The students would be given sample paintings and would be asked to copy them. The facilitators will explain them about the motifs of flowers and tree and techniques required for the drawing.

 

Preparation Time: 15 minutes (Before the Session)

  • Arrange the pen, pencil, sharpener, eraser, scale, paper, marker pens/shine pens

  • Arrange the samples

  • Registration?

  • Set a space for the activity

  • Arrange the samples

  • Arrange material for PP presentation

Duration: 8 hours [4 hrs per day (30 mins break)]

Days: 6th to 7th of July, 2024 (2 days) 

Time: 09:00 am to 01:00 pm

Requirements: Adult Art Enthusiasts (Beginners to Intermediate)

Location: Junkiri Feminist Library, Taha Galli, Kathmandu


The 2 days session includes these basic courses:


  1. Mithila Flowers and trees-  1st day - line work- colour markers+marker pens

  2. Mithila Animal and Border motifs- 2nd day-  colour markers+marker pens


Materials: Newsprint paper, Indian Cartridge, A4 size paper, pencil, sharpener, eraser, markers pen (Black+Red), scale, Sample paintings (Prepared by Sapana and Pallavi).

Day 2 Activity: Mithila Animal and Border motifs

Duration: 4 hrs (30 min break)

Goal:  Introduce different motifs and patterns used in the animal motif (fish, elephant, snake) of Mithila painting. The facilitators will explain them about the motifs and the techniques required for the drawing.
