A weeklong online art workshop was organized in collaboration with Mobile Library for the six art fellows for the Art Educators Fellowship program 2022. The workshop was facilitated by artists Pallavi Payal and Sapana Sanjeevani. The facilitators made a presentation on how they use the traditional form of art to initiate conversations around contemporary, social concerns such as women empowerment, cultural identity, gender and queerness. They also shared their personal experiences and encounters that continue to motivate them to investigate the changing norms in the particular art form. The presentation was followed by an art making exercise where the fellows learnt about techniques and symbolism of Mithila art and sketched some of its popular elements of animals, birds, trees and human figures. The fellows created their own paintings and drawings taking inspiration from Mithila art techniques and motifs learned in the session. Their work explored various themes including mental health, gender equality, family structures, sex education, food culture and corrupt political systems.
